A thriving University of Georgia provides each student the opportunity to succeed. That means developing the support capable of addressing each student’s needs—whether it’s overcoming financial barriers or adapting to the complexity of a large university—and providing a straightforward way to access that support. That’s why we’re proud to recruit, admit, and foster growth for students from across the nation and overseas and from every part of Georgia.
Initiatives like ALL Georgia and the Rural Scholars Program provide resources for students from rural parts of our state to succeed on campus. And the hugely successful Georgia Commitment Scholarship program has made the dream of attending our University a reality for hundreds of students.
Since 2016, a group of UGA students has spent part of Spring Break traveling to high schools around Georgia as the Road Dawgs. The program changes its route every year—stopping in metro areas, small towns, and rural communities—but the student volunteers are always ready to spotlight paths to college, talk about campus life, and rally some UGA spirit.
Our new Connect & Complete program aims to proactively support academic success and take a new approach to equipping students with advanced learning skills.
The program introduces students to a variety of resources. Importantly, we are identifying students early and offering proactive outreach to increase the number and percentage of students in good standing. Through this program, we are pinpointing and addressing barriers to success.
Ultimately, the program enables students to identify their academic goals and develop strategies to achieve them.
As a first-generation student from a rural area, beginning classes at UGA felt daunting to Bryson Henriott. But he refused to be intimidated as he pursued his goals. From interning at the Georgia State Capitol and in Washington, D.C., to serving as the President of RISE (Rural Students Igniting Success in Education), Bryson was heavily involved in not only his own student experience but in improving the experiences of his peers.
As SGA President, Bryson also served on the UGA Alumni Board, the UGA Foundation Board of Trustees, the University Council, and the University System of Georgia Advisory Board. The list of his experiences at UGA could fill a book, and he is especially grateful for the opportunities UGA has given him.
It’s truly incredible how much UGA alumni care about students and want to give back to this University. Coming in as a first-generation college student from rural Georgia, I was worried about the costs but have been blown away by the donor support and opportunities that students have at UGA.
